Winter in Alaska

Well, we have not been doing a good job of posting to this blog. But, its also been winter in Alaska. The cold dark days are slowly giving way to cold light days and we are currently in the middle of 'break up' - the time when the ice and snow melts, creating mud. Its also a time when the rocks and sand put on the roads during the winter needs to be removed, which causes lots of dust. All in all, it is not a pretty time in Alaska. But, there is some beauty to be found.

Most recently we spent a Sunday at Portage Lake and Portage Glacier, just 45 minutes south of town. The lake was frozen, but the snow was crusty, making the skiing and even the biking, great. This is a photo of Jennah and Sanuk, heading across the lake towards the glacier.

It was a really unique experience to go right up to the base of the glacier.

And, of course, here is Sanuk jumping!

We also spent a weekend in Talkeetna with our friends, Erin and Justin. It was the nicest weekend of the year! Both Jennah and I did some lake skiing there as well, oh, and Sanuk too!

Once the sun comes back in Alaska, we try to soak it all up! (first sun burns of the year!)

Stay tuned for posts about some of our summer adventures. We are planning on having some visitors, so many fun activities are in the plans! Nate should have some more cool shots from work this summer. Probably lots of awesome vistas of Denali from the study area. He will be working on a very large, new project here in Alaska - the proposed Susitna Dam. While dams are widely seen as mistakes across the rest of the world and are trying to be reclaimed, up in Alaska they are a few decades behind the curve! None-the-less, Nate will be working on the baseline wildlife studies for this proposed project.

We hope all our friends and family, close and far, are doing well and we miss you all!
